Travel Updates - 3 March 2022

There's a busy few weeks on the roads coming up, and the Mt Hotham Resort Management Board is asking that all road users travelling to the resort plan ahead for a safe and stress-free journey.

Roadworks on the Great Alpine Road

These roadworks are necessary for the repair and rehabilitation of the Great Alpine Road, to ensure continued safe travel for all road users year-round on this very busy highway.

Diamantina Corner road works

Landslip works on the Diamantina Corner section of the Great Alpine Road (GAR) will be starting soon and continuing until early May.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane up to Diamantina Hut, but parking on the Diamantina Hut side of the road will be maintained, as will walker access to the Razorback Trailhead.

There is no parking on the other side of the road, which is already cordoned off as the Regional Roads Victoria works site office will be located there.

Please bear in mind that there will continue to be hikers crossing the road to the Razorback trailhead for a few months.

Great Alpine Road resurfacing

There is also resurfacing works currently under way near the top of the mountain, which will also cause delays for a few weeks. Please take care until the height of the resurfaced section has been aligned with the existing surface. For more information about the resurfacing works please click here

Heavy vehicle transport on the Great Alpine Road for resort works

Quarry rehabilitation

A crane will be transported up the Great Alpine Road from the Harrietville approach to assist with the rehabilitation of the old quarry site on Mt Little Higginbotham. The crane will be used to add boulders to the site, and will be transported up the GAR on Monday 7 March. Please allow a little extra time for travelling on Monday!

Alpine Gateway pre-cast panels transport

Starting on Monday 7 March, the RMB will be transporting pre-cast cement panels to the Alpine Gateway construction site. This will involve 6-8 trucks 19 metres long per day  transporting the precast panels up the mountain for construction of the Alpine Gateway car park.

They will be travelling between 7am and 5pm until the end of March, but will not be travelling on weekends or public holidays. This traffic, combined with the traffic control at Diamantina Corner, could result in some delays on the road.

Event road closure Sunday 13 March

On Sunday 13 March, the Great Alpine Road will be fully closed between Harrietville and Hotham Heights for the Peaks Challenge event.

This closure will occur between 8am and 1pm. For more information about the event, please click here
