Mt Hotham is one of Victoria’s leading alpine resorts, offering stunning natural vistas and the best snow falls in the State.
In winter, its diverse runs and abundant snow attracts over 150k visitors who enjoy downhill, cross country and backcountry skiing and snowboarding. Over the warmer months (Spring, Summer, Autumn) Hotham appeals to walkers, cyclists and nature-based enthusiasts who enjoy the resort’s vast and striking alpine terrain.
The resort is currently working to match Hotham’s world-class natural assets with high-quality public infrastructure and visitor experiences. This includes the transformation of the Hotham village, the highest of its kind in Australia.
Visitor facility developments with a combined value of $18m are currently underway in-resort, designed to position Mt Hotham for long-term strategic growth. Key projects include Alpine Gateway Car Park and Visitor Centre, Hotham Hub Snowplay & Activity facility, Hotham Alpine Base biathlon centre, and placemaking works to lift the look and feel of the Village.
These critical developments respond to increasing demand from existing and emerging markets, and signal the start of a new phase of growth and revitalisation for the resort.
The opportunity
The Mt Hotham Master Plan identifies that the Wire Plain precinct in winter will be used by families and 'first timers' engaging in snow play experiences, as well as snow shoers and cross country skiers who will use it as a meeting point and rest stop when accessing the cross country network.
In summer, the precinct will also support green-season activation, providing a natural launch point for a different range of recreational and commercial activities. As a major trail head, the Precinct will provide a centralised location for visitors to start their hiking or mountain bike experience, and support new commercial tours and rentals associated with the site.
As such, the development of the Hotham Hub visitor facility is underway. Scheduled for construction after winter 2022, the Hub will provide public facilities as well as hospitality, retail and activity offerings.
The Hotham Hub represents an exciting evolution of the visitor experience at Mt Hotham. Acknowledging the growth of snow play and summer activities within the resort, the Hub will provide a space for respite, relaxation and recreation in a state-of- the-art facility, including indoor and outdoor public space and toilets. The Hub will be complemented with a range of experience enhancements, including hospitality offerings, retail and activities. The Hub also provides the ultimate conference space, presenting a fresh opportunity to engage untapped market segments at Mt Hotham.
The RMB is seeking suitably qualified operators to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the provision of services at the Hotham Hub. This may include the operation of the Hub café, retail space or snow play activities within the Wire Plain Precinct.
Importantly, operators may propose to operate one or all of the commercial components of the Hub.
Proposed plans for the Hub include a commercial kitchen, retail space as well as an information counter, specifically targeted for key user groups of the Wire Plain Precinct. With options to participate in a scaled commercial fit out, opportunities exist for operators to add a unique outlet which complements the new facility.
